‘Scene of the Crime’ is a personal photographic project inspired by The NYPD Municipal Archive. A cache of crime scene photographs captured by official police photographers spanning from the 1800s to the present day.
This collection includes images from the evidence rooms of robberies and murders - mainly between the 1920s and the 1940s. Whilst a lot of the images are gory and graphic, they tend not to repulse but intrigue. The subjects are regularly depicted tenderly. They inspire empathy with the subject embroiled at the scene. The images were taken to record all evidence to try and solve what had happened, meaning that within every shot there could very well be clues to unfold and a story to be told.
